St. Mary's Hospital's Nuclear Medicine Department was the first downstate nuclear medicine department in Illinois. Nuclear Medicine procedures are widely used in the United States to test and treat patients. Highly skilled Licensed/Registered Technologists use special equipment along with radioactive materials to learn how certain organs function and to diagnose and determine the extent of certain diseases. An ADAC Vertex Plus MCD gamma camera is used for imaging heart disease, bone, liver, lungs, tumor studies etc. Our most recent acquisition in Nuclear Medicine includes sentinel node detection with Navigator imaging. We offer Miraluma breast imaging, for staging breast cancer and Molecular Coincidence Detection utilizing a radioactive glucose for tumor imaging.
St. Mary's Nuclear Medicine Department performs the following procedures:
- Bone Scans
- Bone Marrow Scans
- Gallium Scans

There is a dedicated ADAC cardiac camera in the Prairie Heart Institute, which is located in the Cardiovascular Department on the 6th floor of the hospital. The ADAC cardiac camera is used to evaluate the heart's condition in several ways. To check blood supply to the heart, a radioactive material is injected into the blood stream that travels to the heart muscle. Images are taken under exercise-induced and resting conditions to evaluate blood flow. Board certified cardiologists interpret test results. Digital images can also be sent to Prairie Heart Institute, Springfield, for further interpretation and evaluation

MRI
In February of 2006, St. Mary’s Hospital installed a Siemens Avanto with TIMS technology, 32 channels of RF and 76 surface coils making it the most technologically advanced 1.5T in central Illinois. In addition, our MRI is equipped with CINEMA-VISION goggles that allow patients to view television, DVD’s, or videotapes during their examination. It has proved to be very helpful for patients who have had difficulty with claustrophobia in the past. Children have also found comfort with the goggles, greatly reducing the need for sedation.
MRI Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00a.m. – 8:00p.m.
